Your kidneys are each composed of approximately one million filtration units called nephrons. Each nephron consists of a glomerulus (the filtering component) and a tubule. The nephrons function through a two-step process: the glomerulus filters your blood, and the tubule reabsorbs necessary substances back into your bloodstream while removing waste.

In every nephron, the glomerulus cleans your blood, and the tubule retrieves essential substances into your blood while extracting additional waste. The waste and excess water are converted into urine.

Your blood circulates through your kidneys many times daily. Each day, your kidneys filter about 150 quarts of blood. Most of the water and other substances that pass through your glomeruli are reabsorbed into your blood by the tubules, with only 1 to 2 quarts forming urine.

Unfiltered blood enters your kidneys through the renal artery, and the filtered blood exits via the renal vein. The ureter carries urine from the kidney to your bladder.

Unhealthy Kidney Symptoms

The symptoms and signs of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) can develop over time if kidney damage progresses gradually. A loss of kidney function can result in increased fluids or waste products, electrolyte issues, and lymphedema, among other complications. Depending on the extent, diminished kidney function may lead to:

How to Determine the Stages of Kidney Disease

Stage 1: Kidney Health
GFR is normal, but there may be other kidney-related issues or risk factors present. Early intervention can prevent further deterioration.

Stage 2: Mild Kidney Damage
GFR slightly declines but stays within the normal range, often accompanied by other kidney concerns. Lifestyle adjustments can help manage the condition.

Stage 3: Moderate Kidney Damage
GFR further decreases, possibly between 30-59 mL/min/1.73m². This stage may show mild symptoms like fatigue and swelling. Regular medical supervision is necessary.

Stage 4: Moderate to Severe Kidney Damage
GFR continues to decline, potentially between 15-29 mL/min/1.73m². More pronounced symptoms such as anemia and bone problems might occur. Intensive treatments are required.

Stage 5: Kidney Failure
GFR is critically low, below 15 mL/min/1.73m². This is the most severe stage, necessitating kidney replacement therapies like dialysis or kidney transplantation. Comprehensive medical care is essential.

If your kidneys are already in Stage 5, kidney patches can only mitigate its complications rather than cure it. For stages above Stage 4, kidney patches can be utilized to support artificially and aid in the recovery of kidney function. Maintaining a healthy weight supports kidney health. Avoiding excessive use of over-the-counter pain relievers is important. Staying hydrated aids kidney function. Monitoring dietary intake can prevent further damage. Early diagnosis can lead to better management of the disease.
